Description

ChipWits Worlds is an engineering sandbox and colony simulation where every robot is powered by an authentic, simulated MOS 6502 CPU: the legendary microprocessor behind the Apple II, Commodore 64, NES, and Atari 2600. Players command mass-produced 8-bit robots dropped onto lethal alien worlds, hand-crafting assembly subroutines, growing thriving colonies, managing power grids, and optimizing autonomous swarms to survive hostile alien ecosystems.

History & Heritage

In 1984, Doug Sharp and Mike Johnston created ChipWits for the original Apple Macintosh: one of the earliest and most influential graphical robot programming games in computing history, teaching a generation the foundations of computer science through visual logic and state machines (play the original releases at chipwits.com/retro).

On July 11, 2025, ChipWits was rebooted as a modern remake of the classic game (available on Steam: ChipWits on Steam). ChipWits Worlds (ChipWits Worlds on Steam) is the next evolution and follow-on in the franchise, bridging classic retro-computing with modern systemic colony simulations by offering cycle-accurate 65C02 emulation, real memory-mapped I/O registers, deep power-grid logistics, and complex alien ecosystems.

Key Features

  • True Bare-Metal Robotics: Every ChipWit in your colony runs a cycle-accurate 65C02 microprocessor with 64KB of unified RAM, memory-mapped I/O registers, and direct hardware interrupts.
  • Pure 6502 Assembly Programming: Hand-craft real subroutines directly at the register level (A, X, Y, and stack) to read distance sensors, toggle manipulators, route power, and manage cargo.
  • Colony Growth & Energy Economy: Construct infrastructure to expand your footprint across the planet, deploy solar arrays, balance battery buffers, and wire automated charging pads and fabrication bays.
  • Dynamic Sol/Night Planetary Survival: When darkness falls, solar output plunges to zero. If battery reserves dry up, bots shut down in the dark, becoming prey for predatory Electrocrabs.
  • Exponential 5-Tier Tech Tree: Harvest Silicon and volatile Curium to unlock CPU overclocking, RAM expansion, LIDAR, X-Ray optics, jetpacks, and 50% component miniaturization discounts.
  • Hybrid Command Paradigm: Effortlessly transition between RTS-style direct tactical commands, Parameterized Waypoints, and 100% Autonomous Swarms executing custom operating system subroutines.
  • Rich Modding & Operating System Architecture: Build modular .prg action routines that bots share across fleets and adapt dynamically.
